The College Experience Essay The years spent in college are a big transitional stage in every ones life. The years in college are spent in preparation for future endeavors in the real world. Choosing a college is imperative in that it can potentially effect your level of preparation for a professional career or in some cases graduate study. Your choice will impact the quality of education you will be receiving as well as shape your independence. When it came time for me to begin looking at schools I wasnt sure where I wanted to go. I felt that their were so many choices and I found it difficult narrowing my choices down. Factors such as the schools size, the schools locale, and the cost were all part of my decision process. Up until this point schools such as Xavier University of Louisiana, Hampton University, North Carolina State University, Howard University, and North Carolina Central University were all realistic choices for school. North Carolina Central became my top choice by virtue of its close proximity to my hometown Raleigh, the cost of attendance, and the predominately black enrollment . The location was important because I knew that I would be surrounded with people who shared similar experiences and back grounds while at the same time I would be exposed to students with different experiences and back grounds from that of my own. I felt that North Carolina Centrals location would make it easier adjusting to college simply because being a citizen of Raleigh I am naturally familiar with the area. The size of the institution was also a big factor in my choosing North Carolina Central. I felt that in large schools there was little student teacher interaction, in or out of the classroom but in a smaller school like NCCU I would have an easier time developing a relationship with my professor. In retrospect I feel that this hold true because of teacher to student ratio encourages a more intimate learning environment. When I arrived at Central in January I was surprised by the familiar faces I saw. In my first couple weeks I got reacquainted with many former friends from high school and various summer programs I had participated in. Having acquaintances prior to my attending school made my transition considerably smoother. Having a friend that was familiar with my surroundings was beneficial to me. Living with roommates was an adjustment because I am the only child I never had to really share my space with anyone. The independence and responsibility that comes with living in dorm benefited me and helped me adapt to the new environment and new people. By virtue of my experiences both academically and socially I truly feel that I am in an institution that embraces people like myself and I am anxious to create a legacy of my own to add to the rich tradition here at North Carolina Central University. Overall I am completely satisfied with choosing North Carolina Central University as my school because I researched schools and made the decision best for me. I knew that my choosing Central was an important step in my life and my actions that followed would have to reflect my goal of graduating.

Beowulf is a very brave hero, he has fought and killed many creatures before, but this battle was different. He knew this battle was of great importance to everyone, and that made him that much more nervous. This creature was fierce and had been tormenting their village for as long as they could remember, so her death would be a huge victory for Beowulf and it would be an even bigger relief for the villagers. All of the people in the village were cheering for Beowulf as he walked away headed off to the greatest battle of his life. As the battle began Beowulf was dripping with sweat, he knew he had a difficult task ahead but he was ready for what ever happened. Grendel’s mother and Beowulf stood for a moment and looked to each other’s eyes and imagined the battle that was ahead of them. She swung her sword at his waist but he quickly moved out of the path. He swung his sword aiming for her neck, but she was quick and blocked the swing. Beowulf swung again and again nervously trying to kill the beast. Beowulf slowly became mad with himself for taking so long to slay her, so he began to try even harder. His heart was pounding and the sweat was dripping from the tips of his hair down to his face. He swung the sword with perfect precision and hit Grendel’s mother in her throat. Nothing had happened, she was not injured. This greatly confused Beowulf as he began to swing as hard as he could and stab her with every chance he had. Still he was not injuring her at all. Beowulf had discovered that his man made weapons were of no match for Grendel’s witchy mother. Beowulf looked over on the wall next to them and saw a magnificent sword hanging on the wall adorned with beautiful carvings, it was blessed with magic. No normal man could ever have lifted that sword, but Beowulf was no normal being. He waited for the right moment to go and retrieve the sword, and when he found the perfect opportunity and he ran straight towards the wall. He pulled the sword down with great force and began running towards Grendel’s mother. Beowulf took in a deep breath as he leaned back and heaved the sword forward. Beowulf had sliced straight through Grendel’s mother’s scaly neck, blood began to pour everywhere and he heard her bones cracking as the sword passed through her.

Literature Reflection Paper

James Kain wrote the essay â€Å"Why Literature† and from reading that, I got the various opinions about Literature from a Literature professor’s point of view. I really liked the quote â€Å"Students always ask why they have to read this stuff. I understand their position; they have been brought up in a culture that values eternal youth in a material world† (Kain). Throughout my years in school, I have never heard any teacher or professor that understands our pains and suffering of reading, analyzing and learning Literature. Literature class is not my best choice of a class but Prof. Kain made Literature fun and exciting for me.I am so happy that I got the chance to take his Literature class because he really made it fun for us. In the way that I see it, movies, stories and poems are all the same. One is on the screen and the other two are on paper. And they both have the same motive to express feelings, stories and problems. Throughout the essay by Mr. Kain, he wrote many things that really stood out to me. â€Å"The stuff of poetry, story and drama, written by a master of the language, helps us explore our own lives and destinies† (Kain). This quote really made me think about all of the wonderful works of words that we have read in this class.What this quote means is that certain stories, poems and types of drama makes me think of our own lives and what our dreams are. Another quote that really stood out to me is â€Å"The works of poets and storytellers differ from other writings because they expose questions, emotions, doubts and fears; they illuminate the writer’s inner life, and they vitalize our language – that is, they give life and meaning to words we normally take for granted† (Kain). When I read this, it reminded me of the poem that we read by Theodore Roethke My Papa’s Waltz. In that poem, the ordinary words that we would be using in our daily lives really came to life.That poem had a lot of i nner emotions from the poet’s personal life since it was about his father who he wished had a better relationship with. The third and final quote from this that I really liked was: â€Å"Writers of literature help us do this. They give us the story of their own struggle with this noisy, marvelous, frustrating God-blessed troublesome world. They show us views of life that we could never experience by ourselves† (Kain). Poets and authors give us another look on life with their works. We may have our own issues and problems but no everyone has the same problems as us.The problems that the poets and authors give us can be so much worse than what we are facing. Always remember that everyone has their own issues and problems and they are not the same as you. In my earlier paragraphs, I mentioned the poem by Theodore Roethke My Papa’s Waltz. I really liked this poem a lot because it was the type of poem that really stood out to you and you would never forget it. By rea ding the title alone, you would think that the poem would be a nice happy one but after the first stanza, that all changes. The words in that poem were not used in the ordinary way that we would use them in our daily lives.The one line from the poem: You beat time on my head with a palm caked hard by dirt, Then waltzed me off to bed still clinging to your shirt makes you think of the use of words that are in this stanza and what they mean in the context of the sentence. The short stories section of this class was not my best. I like to read stories but analyzing is not something that I can do at the top of my head. I really have to think about the story, plot and characters really deeply in order to finally come up with a conclusion on the analysis of the whole story. The one story that really got to me is The Black Cat by Edgar Allen Poe.This was the type of story that was so unreal and very disturbing. After reading the part about when the cat was making the noise inside the wall even though his owner killed him; it really sent chills down my spine. This is the type of story you can easily tell to people on Halloween and they would really spooked out. This type of story really let the emotions out to the reader. That is what I like about when I read certain stories and poems; I want the author or poet to expose emotions in the words so I can feel the same way as the author or poet feels.I am pretty sure that for everyone in the class, the movie The Dead Poet’s Society was by far the best thing that we have done in this class. The movie did a good job in expressing the types of freedom, wishes and desires for each of the characters. The tragic ending for one of the main characters Neal Perry was definitely an eye opening for everyone. I am sure that no one really expected that to happen. Neal had a lot of pressure from his father; going to a good school, getting the highest grades than anyone else and getting into Yale or Harvard. Neal wanted to be a f ree bird but it was his Dad that was holding him back.His main passion was acting and he still went on with it even though he knew of the consequences that would follow. This type of emotion made me think of me because I know I have a lot of pressure from my parents especially since I am a Nursing major and after getting my degree here at Neumann University, they want me to get my Masters and become a Nurse Practitioner. I feel like all students in high school and college get a lot of pressure from their parents and the main reason for that is that their parents love them and want what is best for them.This was the type of drama that really expressed emotions of every one of the characters and that is whole main idea of Literature. In conclusion, I really liked this Literature class and I am really happy that I got the chance to take it with Prof. James Kain. He really knows what Literature is and he really makes it fun for us students. Literature is not that bad; you can like many stories and poems if you like movies because basically movies are like the same as stories and poems. The only difference is that movies are on the screen, stories and poems are on paper.

Dying for Sleep - 1903 Words

The poems To Sleep by John Keats and The Pains of Sleep by Samuel Taylor Coleridge appear to discuss the joy and agony in sleeping; however, the poetry reveals a deeper meaning than sleep alone with insight into events in the individual poets’ life. Poetry is unique, every reader may have a different interpretation than the previous reader, and there is no such thing as a correct reading of a poem. The interpretation of the following poetry starts out discussing sleep; though, with evidence, this reading will prove to reveal a more substantial meaning that heavily relates to the life of the poet in question. John Keats enjoyed toying with many styles of poetry; for instance, in To Sleep he uses the form of the sonnet (Behrens Len 530).†¦show more content†¦In addition, Keats insinuates death using the same words that potentially reveal sleep. For instance, visiting the words, â€Å"enshaded† and â€Å"embowered† again, shows how the darkness that may once have been thought to describe the safety of a blanket or even the dark of the night to help sleep is now another tool to help decipher the clues of death. Shown in line three, Keats writes, â€Å"Our gloom-pleased eyes, embowered from the light† the use of the word â€Å"light† may be representative as life. This may then translate as the speaker saying how he wishes to extinguish the light that is his life with the embowered darkness of death (Behrens Len 530). These images may (potentially) confuse the reader unless there is an understanding of Keats life at the time of this poem. John Keats did not live a long life, only surviving from 1795 – 1821, his original goal in life involved working in the medical field (Motion 76). After some exposure to literature, he soon abandoned his medical passions and shifted his focus onto writing poetry (Motion 328). In fact, he became an apprentice for an apothecary-surgeon in 1811, passed all of his medical exams in 1816 and decided one day that the medical field was just not for him (Motion 47-48).
